According to a recent report from Protenus and DataBreaches.net, the number of breached patient records topped 11 million in June alone, more than any month this year. The exact number of stolen records was available in 23 of the 29 incidents that took place throughout the month, with the majority of stolen records attributed to thedarkoverlord, a computer hacker who listed millions of stolen patient records for sale online in a single incident. Of all the breaches in June, an astonishing 86 percent involved 24 healthcare providers providing further evidence of how far behind the health care sector is when it comes to cybersecurity. For comparison, the number of reported breaches in May accounted for 691,000 compromised records.
