Three months ago, the State Department reported that its unclassified email system had been compromised by hackers and insiders are reporting that the government has still been unable to evict them from their servers.
The State Department has been working with contractors and the National Security Agency to scan its systems and block the hackers access. However, the hackers continue to slightly tweak their tools to circumvent the defenses.
It is still not clear how much data the hackers had access to but officials claim that they had only breached the unclassified email system, which still can contain sensitive information. Russian hackers are suspected to be behind the breach, which comes as little surprise as both governments use cyberspace to spy on one another.
The Wall Street Journal has the rest of the story.
