HUB International’s Martin Hughes Elected Chairman of The Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers
WASHINGTON, D.C. – October 2, 2018 – Martin P. Hughes, executive chairman of the Board of Directors for HUB International in Chicago, was elected 2019 Chairman of The Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers, as announced today by The Council. He succeeds David L. Eslick, chairman and chief executive officer of Marsh & McLennan Agency (MMA) in New York.
Hughes was elected during The Council’s 105th annual Insurance Leadership Forum (ILF) in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Insurance Leadership Forum has been instrumental to the commercial property/casualty insurance industry since its beginnings in 1913, and continues to be the premier industry meeting for market leaders worldwide.
“Marty’s story is well known—that he got into the industry by accident—and what he has accomplished since is a true testament of a leader who works hard and just has a knack for the business,” said Ken A. Crerar, President/CEO of The Council. “Marty took Hub from a startup to one of the largest privately held insurance brokerages in the world. He’s well liked and well respected, and we look forward to him leading our organization.”
Hughes has over 40 years of experience in the insurance brokerage industry. He started in the industry as a salesman in 1973 at Mack and Parker, Inc., (now a part of HUB International Midwest Limited), where he eventually served as president from 1990-1999, and as chairman from 1999-2001. He has served as HUB International’s chief executive officer and chairman of the Board of Directors since December 1999. As of January 1, 2018, Hughes became executive chairman of the Board of Directors.
Hughes earned his degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and currently serves as a Board Member for Mount Carmel High School. He is a member of the Economic Club of Chicago and the Executives’ Club of Chicago.
As Chairman of The Council, Hughes leads a team of officers including Vice Chairman David O. Becker, president and chief executive officer of Cottingham & Butler, Inc., in Dubuque, Iowa; Treasurer Nancy Mellard, executive vice president and General Counsel at CBIZ in Kansas City, Mo.; and Secretary Robert J. Klonk, chief executive officer of Oswald Companies in Cleveland, Ohio.
