The National Consumer League has written a letter to FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez, requesting that they hold a workshop solely focused on data breaches, stating that “the risk of data breaches is too great and more needs to be done to safeguard the security of Americans’ personal information.”
NCL Executive Director Sally Greenberg has pointed towards the FTC’s previous successful workshops focused on privacy and security issues with emerging technologies. Greenberg wants the workshop “to create a record that the commission can use to understand how well existing voluntary guidelines, self-regulatory regimes and cybersecurity technologies are working to protect consumer data…The event would also assist the Commission to develop guidance for businesses and other entities on how comply with Section 5 of the FTC Act by better protecting their customers’ data.”
