The House and Senate extended the authorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) until December 20, 2019 as part of the latest funding bill for the federal government, and the President signed the bill last night.
Congress must now reauthorize the NFIP no later than 11:59 p.m. on December 20, 2019. It is expected that NFIP reauthorization will again be included in yet another government funding bill to be voted on before Christmas.
Should the NFIP authorization lapse, FEMA would still have the authority to pay claims; however, it would stop selling and renewing policies.
We will continue to work with industry allies to push for meaningful reform and long term reauthorization.
