On May 30 the House approved a two-week extension of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), authorizing the program until June 14. The House was able to approve the measure under unanimous consent during a pro forma session. There was concern that the extension may see the same fate as it did during the previous pro forma session, an objection by Rep. Thomas Massie (KY-04).
What now?
It is expected that the House will vote on a $19 billion disaster aid package when it is session in June. This is important because it includes language to reauthorize the NFIP until September 30. The Senate already passed the measure before it left for a week-long recess on May 23.
What’s next:
House Financial Services Chairwoman Maxine Waters (D-CA-43) and Ranking Member Patrick McHenry (R-NC-10) have committed to work together and come up with some sort of reauthorization and reform package over the summer to have something ready to vote on once Congress comes back into session after the August recess.
